Arts & Crafts

The inspiration for this project is the Arts & Crafts movement, which stood for traditional craftsmanship, and encouraged designers to personally master the techniques and materials of the objects of their design.

Researching this subject raised a question about the present day, when everything can be technologically copied - can we discern a handmade, personally designed object from an industrial object made through a divided chain of labor?

I searched for ways in which an artist can prove the personal craftsmanship of his art and came across American artist Colin Chillag, who never fully finishes a painting, thus leaving his work process apparent to his viewers.

Just as Chillag’s white canvas is partially filled with paint, I addressed the garment as a hollow object to be partially filled by the body, emphasizing the contrast between fitted and loose areas of the garment.
