Yoko

For this project I have designed a bridal gown inspired by Yoko Ono.

Ono defines her art as the most important thing in her life.

I was inspired by a well known art performance of hers that took place in the 60’s called “Cut Piece”.
“Cut Piece” is a participatory art performance in which the artist sits in an empty room dressed in her best suit and the viewer is invited to approach her and cut off pieces of her clothes.

The recognition of beauty in imperfection, destruction, asymmetry, or even death and decay is a basic perception of the Japanese philosophy of “Wabi Sabi”.

The garment is inspired by these ideas, and more specifically by a japanese art called “Kintsugi”, in which broken pottery is repaired using gold lacquer.
In this technique the cracks of the breakage are highlighted rather than disguised.

This garment depicts the earthly and natural spirit of Yoko Ono.
