Chicago Circus

For this project I have created a new concept idea for the “Chicago” musical by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse.

The musical is set in the 20’s of Chicago and is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice. It includes manipulations, provocations, corruption and role playing, and it cynically depicts real life scenes as Jazz and Burlesque performances of the time.

As a new concept for the musical, I have decided to exaggerate this idea of “entertainment” by merging the world of Jazz with the Circus world, which at the time represented an endless collection of bizarre, eccentric, extravagant performances.

Based on this new concept, I have designed the stage costumes for main character Roxy Heart.

The executed garment is designed for the first scene of the musical, in which Roxy convinces her husband Amos to take the blame for the murder she committed, as she dedicates a song to him-
“Funny Honey”.

In the new concept this scene becomes “The Elephant Show” of the circus, in which Roxy is the elephant tamer and Amos is the poor obedient elephant.
